SHOPPERS at Waitrose are doing bags more for the environment after Derbyshire County Council challenged the store to ditch disposable bags in favour of reusable ones.
The county council, in partnership with district and borough councils in Derbyshire, asked supermarkets to remove disposable bags from display and encourage customers to buy reusables – often called ‘bags for life’.
Waitrose in Buxton was happy to help and will only offer disposable bags to shoppers as a last resort.
Cllr Brian Lucas said: “By using reusable carrier bags instead of disposable ones we can really reduce the amount of rubbish sent to landfill.
“We’re pleased Waitrose is cutting use of disposable bags and hope other shops will follow suit.”
Waitrose Buxton Branch Manager, Tess Shaw, said: “Customers in Buxton will have a genuine pioneering role when it comes to shaping our green agenda as a business.
“Waitrose is committed to reducing unnecessary packaging and plastic bag usage.
“Many of our customers already engage in our Bag for Life scheme and use our bag recycling facility.
“Through this initiative, we aim to raise awareness and have a positive influence on shopping habits when it comes to the environment.”
