EXPATRIO – one of the world's newest and brightest chamber music ensembles – will present an adventurous programme of works for flute, piano and cello at St John's Church, Buxton, on July 24, 8:00 to 9:30 pm.
Headlining the recital will be George Crumb's Vox Balaenae (Voice of the Whale) for amplified instruments. This seldom-performed work requires the musicians to evoke a seascape via the use of alternative techniques such as strumming, whistling and even chiselling.
Pianist and Macclesfield resident Fiona Corston reveals that: "Most concert venues would rather not have the strings of their grand piano scraped by a chisel or muted by a glass rod.
"As a result, audiences are not often given the chance to experience the haunting beauty of Voice of the Whale.
"St John's were refreshingly open-minded about the idea but, just to be on the safe side, I will be performing on a specially prepared Yamaha CP80 courtesy of Shackleford Pianos."
Expatrio will tread more familiar ground during the remainder of the recital, with Martinu's Trio, a classic of the flute trio repertoire, and Kapustin's jazz-inspired Trio Op. 86.
Tickets are £8.00 for adults and £5.00 for concession (children are free) and are available now from the Buxton Opera House at
