AT THE July meeting of Chapel-en-le-Frith WI, Mildred Howard of Hayfield WI gave an excellent report of the National AGM.
One exciting and achievable target set by Fay Mansell, the National Chair, is overall membership of 250,000 by the WI's centenary in 2015.
Professor Averil MacDonald emphasised the need for more girls to become scientists.
Chapel members helped
with catering for the Derbyshire Scout Council Four Inns Walk and were offered a donation of £80, which was presented to Chapel Primary School to buy library books and help towards their Leukemia Fund.
After the coffee morning during Wells Dressing weekend, members donated £100 to the Mobile Physiotherapy Unit. On July 27, there will be an outing to Liverpool and there is an invitation to join Horwich End on a visit to the National Memorial on August 7.
Speaker at the July meeting was Jenny Harkison, Regional Information Officer for the National Institute for the Deaf, based in Manchester, who said at least 50 per cent of people are likely to lose some hearing and nine million heavy loss, while a small proportion suffer sudden loss.
An important part of her work is to promote better understanding among hearing people. Mary Leach thanked the speaker.
