Cllr Baldry took over the role from Cllr Jean Wharmby at the annual meeting of High Peak Borough Council on Tuesday night. His wife Linda will serve as Mayoress.

His appointment was opposed by Cllr Caitlin Bisknell, leader of the Labour Group, who said she did not believe he was a suitable candidate for civic office.

"It does sadden me to say that the Labour Group cannot and will not support the nomination for Mayor. This is not a decision taken lightly, and certainly not one taken out of malice or spite, but, we believe, for the good of the borough," she told council members.

"It is a sad day for this council when its ceremonial offices are apparently used as a means by the ruling group to try to placate, bring into line – dare I say gag? – one or two of its more vociferous members.

"He is on record as having made clear his contempt, disdain even outright disrespect for this council and its officers.

"There are many others around the chamber tonight on all sides and from all parties who have done more to earn this honour – and whom we could have supported.

"I also believe it is setting a dangerous precedent to have someone quite so political as Robin."

Liberal Democrat councillor David Lomax also opposed the appointment. He said: "I could have supported him as leader. I think he would make a wonderful leader as an outspoken person for your party but not necessarily as satisfactory a representative of the High Peak as there has been over the last year."

Proposing Cllr Baldry as Mayor, Cllr Tony Kemp said: "I believe Cllr Robin Baldry will set a benchmark of achievement during his year of office that will be a hard work to follow."

His views were echoed by Cllr Bob Morris, who added: "I know Cllr Baldry to be a man of energy, enthusiasm and down right hard work."

Cllr Baldry, accepting the position, said: "I am extremely proud and privileged to be given the opportunity to become Mayor of the High Peak.

"I can assure you I will be taking on the role in the same spirit that Cllr Jean Wharmby and her husband George have shown to the High Peak."

Cllr Tony Bingham was elected to serve as deputy mayor.

Cllr Tony Ashton has been chosen as the new leader of High Peak Borough Council after Cllr John Faulkner stepped down for personal reasons.

Cllr Emily Thrane was chosen as deputy leader.
