Buxton 1 Sheffield Wednesday 2
BUXTON wrapped up their pre-season friendly programme with another entertaining encounter packed with skilful passing soccer by both sides and goalmouth action aplenty.

The home side had the better of the early exchanges and substitute Mark Lees s
aw a powerful 25-yard drive saved, Gavin Knight put a glancing header narrowly wide and trialist midfielder Pat McGuire, ex Bradford City and Farsley Celtic, likewise almost found the target with a deft, curling lob.

Another neat attacking move saw Michael Towey go close with a header but on 37 minutes Knight scored with a deflected shot after Steve Brodie had created the opportunity.

However the Bucks proved brittle in defence as the interval approached and the youthful Wednesday team scored twice in three minutes.

McGuire made a rare mistake in midfield, Hume committed a foul and visiting striker Tunnard netted from the penalty spot for 1-1 then pacy Nathan Modest evaded Gregg Anderson's tackle to slide the ball past Scott Hartley.

Buxton's second half display was impressive. Tighter defending snuffed out Wednesday's threat and, going forward, the Bucks passed the ball and applied periods of consistent pressure on the visitors goal.

Almost immediately Tom Griffiths planted a firm header against the bar, then Mark Balfe set up Mark Wilson but his close-range shot found only the side netting. Wilson then couldn't make contact with a Maxfield cross before Brodie gave Balfe the chance to score but his equaliser was ruled out of offside. However, Buxton did level matters on 77 minutes when Wilson scored from close range after neat play by Maxfield and Brodie.

The one blot on the evening was an injury to midfielder Dave Henry but on the credit side, the whole squad has now signed Unibond forms including recent recruit McGuire.

Buxton: Hartley, Black, Hume, Anderson, Maxfield, Henry (Lees 5), McGuire, Towey, Brodie, Knight, Walker. Half time subs - Smith, Balfe, Wilson, Griffiths.

Attendance: 221.
