BUXTON FC management team John Reed and Clive Freeman had nothing but praise for their players after their heroic play-off semi-final win over Witton Albion.
After the Bucks went through to the final following a 6-5 sudden death penalty shoot out win, Reed said: "I am just absolutely ecstatic. There is no feeling as good as this, other than walking out at Wembley back in 1990.

"It was a fantastic game, it just had everything. At one-nil we had chances to go two or three up and didn't take them and the error Scott made for their goal he made up for with two great penalty saves.

"Goalkeepers become heroes in these situations and I just thought the lads were absolutely fantastic. I don't think we had a bad player tonight.

"It was just a great advert for UniBond football. It's got to go down as one of the best nights in mine and Clive's history."

When asked about which players had stood out for him, Reed responded: "Without doubt Scott Maxfield, (Terry) Bowker and (Gregg) Anderson. Michael Towey battled hard as well."

Buxton went into the match in relaxed form with all the pressure on Witton Albion who had led the league by a huge margin earlier in the season, only to miss out on automatic promotion by two points. Buxton didn't have a particularly strong start to the season so expectations were not too high.

"We proved everyone wrong," Reed commented. "They never gave us a chance outside Buxton but this is great for the players, the fans, the club, everybody."

Reed also took time to praise Buxton's vocal support. "The fans were absolutely brilliant as they have been all season," he said. "They are a credit to the football club."

Buxton's victory has earned them a play-off final tie away at Gateshead this Saturday after the North East side beat Eastwood Town 4-0 in Tuesday night's other semi final clash.

"It will be a very difficult ask," Reed said of the game. "But this was a difficult ask. They will be over confident because they've given us two good hidings but we are ready for Gateshead."

Assistant manager Clive Freeman added: "It is just great for everybody involved, for the people that wash the kit, the people who clean the dressing rooms, everybody behind the scenes.

"Obviously we've put a lot of hard work in right from the pre-season friendlies up to the final match."

"We are going to go to Gateshead now on Friday night, have a bit of fun, a couple of pints and just enjoy it."
